Seat Availability

The Franke Reading Room is open to researchers by appointment on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 1:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Walk-ins are not possible.

In this calendar, you may make an appointment for one or multiple visits in a single request. If you need assistance booking multiple appointments, contact circul@artic.edu. Appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis and will be confirmed via email within two business days.

WHAT AN APPOINTMENT INCLUDES

Making an appointment gains you access to the reading room, onsite use of computers with access to a variety of databases, use of self-serve scanning, help from reference librarians, and use of reference texts on the open shelves.

Additionally, when confirmed, you will be provided with a login to our online catalog. This will allow you to place requests for library materials that will be prepared for your visit. Less than 1% of our collection is available on the shelves in the reading room. Most materials are accessed by placing requests through the catalog and having staff members locate it and bring it to your table (called paging).

Many of our materials are stored offsite, within curatorial departments, or have special handling requirements. It is best to request items at least a week in advance, but please place requests at least 48 hours prior to your appointment.

If you do not place requests beforehand, you will not have access to books or other materials at the start of your appointment. Any requests placed during your visit before 3 PM will be paged at 3 and brought to you if available.
