The Research Center
The Art Institute's Franke Reading Room is a shared space in which researchers can consult the collections of the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries and the Art Institute of Chicago Archives. Appointments are required. Walk-ins are not possible.
The Research Center brings together the divisions of Academic Engagement and Research, the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries, and the Art Institute of Chicago Archives to expand access to the museum’s rich educational and research offerings.
Guidelines
Public Researchers:
- Appointments are available Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays,1:30 p.m.–5:00 p.m.
- Appointments are first-come, first-served and will be confirmed via email within two business days.
- Researchers must complete a pre-registration process and submit requests for materials 48 hours prior to the appointment. Some items may take longer for us to obtain and prepare for you. We will email you before your visit if anything you request will not be ready.
- Visitors agree to follow the museum’s visit guidelines in addition to established reading room policies.
SAIC Community:
- Appointments are available Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays,1:30 p.m.–5:00 p.m.
- Appointments are first-come, first-served and will be confirmed via email.
- Please submit requests for materials 48 hours prior to the appointment. Some items may take longer for us to obtain and prepare for you. We highly recommend you make your appointment five days in advance if you have specific items you need to consult or if you have a detailed research question.
