The Research Center

The Art Institute's Franke Reading Room is a shared space in which researchers can consult the collections of the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries and the Art Institute of Chicago Archives. Appointments are required. Walk-ins are not possible. 

The Research Center brings together the divisions of Academic Engagement and Research, the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries, and the Art Institute of Chicago Archives to expand access to the museum’s rich educational and research offerings.

General Guidelines

  • Research appointments are available Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays,1:30 p.m.–5:00 p.m. 
  • Appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and will be confirmed via email within two business days.
  • Researchers must complete a pre-registration process and submit requests for materials 48 hours prior to the appointment. If we do not receive your requests in a timely manner, your visit will be canceled.
  • Researchers agree to follow the museum’s visit guidelines in addition to established reading room policies.
